House Talk with Silvia Dukes

Little Free Library in Brooksville, Florida

On a recent visit to City Hall in Brooksville, Florida, I was delighted to discover this little free library.

Not a library in traditional sense, it works as a book exchange between people who like to share their books. The idea is to take a book and leave a book or take a book, read it and return it. Or if you so desire, just leave a book for others to enjoy.

The day I was there, the little library was well stocked, when I came by again a couple of weeks later, there were a lot less books available so it's good to know that people are taking advantage of this little exchange. It would be nice to see more of these little libraries pop up in neighborhoods or public places for people to enjoy a good read.

Good morning, Sylvia... I've seen these pop up here and there in the Charlotte area, especially inside sibdivisions. I love the idea.

Thanks for sharing your experience and your photograph. These little libraries have become very popular.

It is such a great idea.. get your face off your smartphone or computer  and start reading again.  I really enjoy reading, and not from a Kindle or iPod.  I like the feeling of holding a book and turning the pages.  My daughter and I own a pub in Toronto and we have a book exchange there.. and it is well used.

Nina Hollander yes, I think it's a great idea, too and hope the idea will catch on in our area as well.

Roy Kelley  they definitely would be nice way to get people reading and getting books without having to drive to a larger library.

Gloria Valvasori, ASA  I am like you, I prefer a real book with a cover and pages to turn. We already spend a lot of time in front of electronics so I want to do my reading the traditional way.

What a great way to encourage reading in the community.

Hi Silvia -- every time I see one of these Free Little Libraries in our area, I smile -- such a great community effort.

Belinda Spillman I agree, I guess it depends on the neighborhood but I hope children books are also included.

Michael Jacobs so true and exactly my sentiment.

Dick Greenberg thank you, hoping to see more of them around here soon.

Anna Banana Kruchten,CRS,CRB,GRI I think it would be a great project for property owner organizations to take on.

Sylvia we don't have anything like that here where I live, but I love the idea.
