Florida Living is Outdoor Living - What is a Lanai?

Florida Living is Outdoor Living - What is a Lanai?

When people think about moving to Florida and are beginning to look for homes, they will often wonder about a term that they keep seeing over and over in the listing descriptions of homes for sale.  Usually, one of the first questions I hear from buyers is "What is a Lanai?"

Well, the term lanai is a bit of a fancy word for a porch or other covered area typically attached to the house. In Florida, lanais are usually screened in so you can enjoy the outdoors without worrying about being bugged by pesky bugs.

Sometimes, you will find lanais that are enclosed with windows as well as screen and then we might call them "Florida rooms".  Other times, the lanai may be part of a larger enclosure such as a pool enclosure.

The photo shows a great example of a lanai. I took this photo a couple of years ago as part of the listing photos for a beautiful home in Spring Hill, Florida. It was a large enclosed area with a garden view and the sellers had done an excellent job furnishing it with various groupings of seating and plants. It was an outdoor oasis and not surprisingly, this lanai became one of the great selling points for this home.

What is a Lanai?

A great space for relaxing, entertaining, and enjoying Florida Living!

Living if Florida myself I know it is a must to have a lanai or a patio for the reason you mentioned the pesky bugs. Thanks for sharing I hope you have a great afternoon.

Hi Sylvia - Thanks for your contest entry - nice photo and a usful explanation. I've lived in a home with a Florida room but never had a lanai to enjoy.

Hi Silvia, those who are moving to FL from other states may not be familiar with lanais but quickly learn. Weather has been perfect for outdoors for the past couple of days to be outdoors.

The screened in part is what would make them a must for me to enjoy.  Mark

Very pretty. I first heard the term when my parents moved to Florida and their new home had one. Such a relaxing place to sit.

And it is something we don't have in Oklahoma. I have a friend in Naples Florida that just did an awesome one.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, Broker, Tacoma Washington I guess, you don't have the need for insect screening as we have here. And yes, we have decks and patios as well. Coastal living is better for those as there is always a light breeze acting as a natural bug deterrent.

Pat Champion thanks and you enjoy a wonderful bug free evening!

Grant Schneider the BBQ has to go outside on a little concrete pad by itself. Otherwise, it would be a fire hazard!

Dick Greenberg maybe one of these days!

Beth Atalay it really has been great!  No A/C and being able to keep the windows open is such a treat. Definitely one of the best times of the year to be living in Florida.

Mark Don McInnes, Sandpoint yes, whoever invented screen deserves a medal!

Anna Banana Kruchten  it's a great extension of the living space in Florida!

Sharon Tara I think that is how many people first learn about it.

Joe Pryor that would be worth a visit, don't you think?

George Souto thank you George, it is usually I who learns from you!

Silvia- you've done an excellent job of explaining what a lanai is and the one you showed looks so inviting!

I first heard the term from a friend referring to her screened room in Hawaii. I think everyone has one there.

Silvia

The lanai is Florida's version of a deck or a porch . . . . It's also one of places where I spend a lot of time outdoors

Good luck and success.

Good Morning Silvia - I guess it depends on your preference as to whether you want them all enclosed.  I would want a large enough open space for outdoor BBQ.

Posted by Grant Schneider, Your Coach Helping You Create Successful Outcomes (Performance Development Strategies) 11 months ago

Kathy Streib thank you, it's nice to hear this from a home stager!

Debbie Reynolds it's probably a Hawaiian term that's beed adopted here.

Lou Ludwig it's probably one of the most utilized spaces!

Grant Schneider of course, one thing would not exclude the other if it suits your needs and preferences.

Silvia, the use of colors both natural and with the cushions is very eye-catching. I never connoted lanais with Florida, only Hawaii. Now I am better informed!
