Trees and Decorations:

• When purchasing an artificial tree, look for the label "Fire Resistant". When buying a live tree, check for freshness. The tree should not lose many needles when tapped on the ground.
• Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree.
• Did you know "angel hair" consists of spun glass? To avoid eye and skin irritation, wear gloves when using it to decorate.

Lights:

• Use only lights that have been tested for safety as indicated by the labels UL or ETL/ITSNA. Make sure lights have been certified for their intended use. Check each set of lights, new or old, for broken or cracked sockets, frayed or bare wires, or loose connections. Throw out damaged sets.
• Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.
• Turn off all holiday lights when you go to bed or leave the house. Lights could short out and start a fire.

Candles:

• Keep burning candles within sight, do not leave unattended and extinguish before leaving the room or going to bed.
• Keep lighted candles away from trees, other evergreens, and decorations.
• Keep away from children and pets.

Fireplaces:

• Use care with "fire salts," which produce colored flames when thrown on wood fires. They contain heavy metals that, if eaten, can cause intense gastrointestinal irritation and vomiting. Keep them away from children.
• Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. Wrappings can ignite suddenly and burn intensely, resulting in a flash fire.
• Place a screen around your fireplace to prevent sparks from igniting nearby flammable materials.

This December, take an evening drive down Shoal Line Blvd and see the new holiday decorations!  It was a true community effort spearheaded by the Hernando Beach Property Owner's Association with participation of the business community that made these new decorations possible.    Happy Holidays!

Finally the long awaited pedestrian bridge at Jenkins Creek has been installed.  It spans across the creek and connects the Jenkins Creek viewing tower area to the main parking lot in Linda Pedersen Park. 

Just recently been installed, the new bridge already enjoys great popularity.  On a warm and balmy December Sunday, fishermen were trying their luck hoping to bring home a fresh catch for dinner while a grey heron was looking on, patiently hoping for a handout.
