Summer Gardening in Florida

Summer Gardening in Florida

People who move to Florida from northern parts of the country find that they have to adjust to the different growing conditions when they are thinking about planting flowers or a vegetable garden.

Typically late winter/early Spring and Fall are the best times to plant most vegetables because of the cooler temperatures. Summer heat poses a real challenge to growing things and Florida gardeners are often just happy when they can keep their plants alive during the hottest summer months.

That is definitely true for the few plants I have currently growing. There is a hot pepper plant that was given to me by one of my sellers a couple of years ago. The plant has been happily producing little peppers that start out green and turn a hot red true to their flavor!

I'm keeping it in a large pot where I can move it around if needed. Although it likes sun, it also appreciates some shade during the hottest time of the day.  I just repotted it and it is thriving.

What would summer be without fresh tomatoes? We put a tomato plant next to the air conditioning unit outside. This is also where the condensation drain pipe ends so there is a steady supply of water keeping the soil moist and we don't have to worry about watering the tomato plant. It's doing quite well and I'm hoping to see some tomatoes forming soon.

Finally, here is a photo of a flower bed that's doing quite well. These flowers are fairly maintenance free, they happily grow wherever they can find a spot and are happy with whatever water they get from the rain. They seed themselves so they plant themselves throughout the property if we let them!

Also growing in this area are a few pineapple plants that eventually will produce some delicious pineapples. Pineapples are easy to grow here. Any time you get one, instead of throwing away the top, just stick it in the ground, water it a little and it will start growing. It can take a couple of years before they produce but waiting for it will be worthwhile, you will be rewarded with some of the sweetest pineapples you've ever tasted!

Happy Gardening!
